UK prepay mobile users could save over £66 million per week with Wadja

As consumers cut back, the leading mobile social network is highlighting the needless cost of text messaging in the UK

London, September 12: Wadja, Europe’s leading mobile social network has today revealed that prepay mobile customers in the UK are wasting over £66 million every week on text messages, when mobile social networks provide the same service for free.

In an economic climate when we’re all looking for ways to cut our outgoings, Wadja has identified an alarming gap in the knowledge of mobile users in the UK.

  • There are 1.4 billion text messages sent every week in the UK, more than any other European country. 660.8 million of these are sent from prepay mobile phone
  • The average cost of a text sent on a prepay mobile phone is just over 10p
  • Wadja members can send text messages to any mobile in the world, free of charge
  • UK prepay mobile users spend over £66 million every week on text messages. This means £9,440,000 worth of prepay text messages are being sent every day
  • These figures would be even higher if text messages sent by mobile phone users on 12 month contracts were included

Alex Christoforou, Managing Director at Wadja comments: “Interestingly, Ofcom reported a record number of people using their mobile phones to access the internet in 2007. Few people, however, utilise mobile social networks such as Wadja to send sms messages, emails and even mms messages free of charge. The free sms service has fuelled a dramatic 615% increase in UK Wadja membership over the past four months.”

Wadja provides a free one-to-one text message message service to all its members and can be accessed from any mobile web device or internet connection, anywhere in the world. From your Wadja account you can text any friend, based anywhere in the world, entirely free, also helping you avoid the premium roaming charges levied by companies for texting outside the UK. Wadja members can also send emails, MySpace, Bebo and mms messages for free.

Wadja’s SMS Plus service also enables people to contact large groups simultaneously, whatever social or mobile network they are on. Sms messages cost less than five pence to send to multiple contacts using the Wadja SMS Plus service, compared to 23 pence as the average cost of SMS roaming in Europe.

Christoforou continues: “Wadja is a great way to keep in contact with friends and family while avoiding the steep sms costs inflicted by the mobile phone companies. The UK is one of the most sophisticated mobile markets in the world, but compared to other countries, people are not making the most of mobile social networks.”
